Ireland head coach Andy Farrell will take charge of the British and Irish Lions next year ahead of their tour of Australia and one of his charges is being tipped to captain them.
Following an inspirational performance as captain in Ireland’s win over South Africa in Durban last weekend, former England fly-half Andy Goode is tipping Caelan Doris to lead the Lions down under.
Not only that, Goode thinks Doris should be Ireland’s captain going forward too.
“You look at Caelan Dorris now, we’re big friends of his, you know Jim’s had FaceTimes off him when he’s been in these dancing places in Las Vegas,” Goode said on the latest episode of The Rugby Pod.
“He’s put his hat in the ring now with that change in performance to be and I said it, he should be Ireland’s captain moving forward.
“They made Peter O’Mahony captain but Lions captaincy and it’s a huge statement as we are a year out from a Lions tour but you’ve got a guy that’s changed the fortunes of Ireland in a week with a leadership performance.
“It was a proper skipper’s performance, that is leading from the front in every facet of the game, even to the point of his post-match press conference where he’s saying ‘I’m in the sin bin, things are going wrong here and I can’t be on the field to influence’. He Comes back on and, my God, does he influence it.
“So Caelan Dorris, for Lions captain, we will start the campaign here.”
What do you think? Should Doris lead the Lions next summer?
