The Ireland captain missed yesterday’s captains run with a stomach bug, and is yet to be passed fit for the Six Nations clash with Italy.
Joe Schmidt is expected to give Best every opportunity to prove his fitness, with Ireland holding back until the team sheets reach the press before making a final decision.
Munster’s uncapped hooker Niall Scannell is in line to start in place of Best, with Leinster star James Tracy in line to take his spot on the replacements bench.
Should the Ulster hooker miss the match, it would mark the the first Six Nations game he’s missed in over 10 years, ending an 51-game streak.
