Safe to say Greig Laidlaw won’t be short of a few quid for the next few years.
The Scotland and Lions scrumhalf is set to join Champions Cup finalists Clermont once he returns from New Zealand and he’s going to be paid quite a tidy some to do so.
Laidlaw has been plying his trade in England with Gloucester since 2014 having joined them from Edinburgh, but when France came knocking, Laidlaw couldn’t resist.
L’Equipe say Toulon and Clermont both made offers for the Scottish captain, but it was the latter who came up with the bigger offer. Clermont are going to be paying him €38k a month for the first year of his contract and a staggering €41k for the two that follow. Toulon offered Laidlaw €38k a month for his final two years and less for the first.
That’s a staggering €456k for the first year of his deal and €492k for the final two. In total Laidlaw will earn almost €1.5 million for his three-year deal. Not bad eh?
