Ins and outs.
It’s been a mixed season for Irish Rugby. While the national side soared to a Grand Slam and Leinster lifted the European Champions Cup – it hasn’t been the best of seasons for Connacht and Ulster.
Both sides have struggled for results and parted ways with their head coaches, with the former still without one for next season (although you could technically say the same about Ulster!).
Munster meanwhile lie somewhere in the middle. By no means has it been a failure of a season, with two semi-final appearances. But a club of their stature wants to be where Leinster are – and that’s winning trophies.
Let’s take a look at how each of the provinces are shaping up for next season by looking a who’s left/leaving and who’s on their way.
Connacht
We can definitely expect Connacht’s new coach to bring in a few additions, but the western province have been busy already. While captain John Muldoon has retired, Munster’s Robin Copeland is an excellent replacement. Australian centre Kyle Godwin and Fijian Sevu Reece are also exciting additions.
Ins: Peter Claffey, Cillian Gallagher, Conan O’Donnell, Robin Copeland, Kyle Godwin, David Horwitz, Joe Maksymiw, Jonny Murphy, Sevu Reece
Outs: Jake Heenan, John Muldoon, Pita Ahki, Andrew Deegan, Cormac Brennan, Denis Coulson, Steve Crosbie, Naulia Dawai, Stacey Ili, Pat O’Toole, JP Cooney, Andrew Browne.
Leinster
The Champions of Europe are yet to make any new signings (bar promoting Jordan Larmour to a senior contract) – but it’s not like they really need any. Leo Cullen has admitted they may look to replace Isa Nacewa by bringing in a centre, potentially from overseas. But other than that, Leinster don’t need to recruit.
Ins: Jordan Larmour, Joe Tomane
Outs: Jordi Murphy, Jamie Heaslip, Isa Nacewa, Richardt Strauss, Cathal Marsh, Peadar Timmins, Oisin Heffernan, Joey Carbery.
Munster
The southern province have made arguably the best signing of all the provinces in the ever-impressive Tadhg Beirne. They’ve also brought in Irish-qualified Mike Haley from Sale to replace Simon Zebo who’s off to France. They’ve also been linked with a move for Joey Carbery, so there could still be more ins – and outs at Munster.
Ins: Tadhg Beirne, Mike Haley, Calvin Nash, Liam O’Connor, Fineen Wycherley, Neil Cronin, Arno Botha, Joey Carbery.
Outs: Simon Zebo, Gerbrandt Grobler, Robin Copeland, David Johnston.
Ulster
The northern province are probably in need of recruitment more than any other of the Irish teams. They need a ten, another center, possibly some reinforcements in the back-row, and probably another winger. A lot of outs. Not a lot of ins. Ulster need to get shopping. Murphy and Moore are excellent additions, and if Marcell Coetzee stays fit that’s a new signing in itself. But that won’t be enough.
Ins: Jordi Murphy, Marty Moore, Nick Timoney, Will Addison.
Outs: Tommy Bowe, Charles Piutau, Christian Lealiifano, Andrew Trimble, Paul Marshall, Paddy Jackson, Stuart Olding, Robbie Diack, Callum Black, Callum Patterson, Brett Herron, Jared Payne.
