He’s got a point.
Former Ireland boss Eddie O’Sullivan is a little confused with Leinster’s signing of New Zealand winger James Lowe and we tend to agree with him if we’re honest.
At 25-years-old and uncapped, Lowe is no veteran that’s gonna come in help players like Adam Byrne and Jordan Lamour, in fact he’s probably going to restrict their game time.
When you look at the amount of backs and wingers Leinster currently have, do they really need him? Sure Lowe will be eligible for Ireland in three years time having got in before the rule changes to five.
But the Rugby World Cup is in two years, and Lowe is going to cause a bit of a logjam.
“Looking at the logjam that Leinster have, I wonder why James Lowe was brought in at all. O’Sullivan told Off The Ball
“If you look at the players they have now, they have Isa Nacewa, Fergus McFadden, Adam Byrne, Barry Daly, Jordan Larmour, Jack Kelly, Ian Fitzpatrick, Hugo Keenan.
“Lowe is 25-years-of-age, he’s not some 30-year-old, 50-cap All-Black, who’s going to bring a huge, vast wealth of experience from playing with the All Blacks. He’s as young as the lads around him and it’s a complete logjam in their wing positions.
“It’s a funny signing in that if you’re a young winger at Leinster, you’d wonder where your future lies,”
It’s an interesting one for sure. When you’ve got guys like Simon Zebo being left go, you wonder could the Lowe money not have went his way in order to try and retain him? The same can almost be said for Scott Fardy. Should that money have went to Donnacha Ryan? S
hould have it been given to Connacht or Ulster to try and bring home exiles like Ian Madigan? Could it have been pumped into academy systems? Imagine Lowe went to Ulster or Munster and prevented guys like Stockdale and Sweetnam from getting game time? It really makes you think.
