Not impressed.
Ireland head coach Andy Farrell wasn’t too impressed with one question in particular following his side’s defeat to South Africa at the Aviva Stadium last night.
Farrell’s side suffered a 24-13 defeat at the hands of the world champions in one of the craziest games of rugby in recent memory.
At one stage, Ireland found themselves down to 12 men, picking up five cards in total on the night, including a 20-minute red card following a dangerous clear-out from lock James Ryan.
In his post-match press conference, Farrell was asked if he thought Ireland’s first-half performance was “shambolic”, and the head coach was not impressed.
“I’d say chaotic. I won’t repeat your word, because I think you’re wrong,” Farrell said.
“I’ve never seen a game like that, ever.
“I suppose, first and foremost, you need to look at yourself and why it’s happened. We’ll do that and make sure we learn the lessons from that.
“My overriding thoughts on it are that I’m unbelievably proud, and for you to start the conversation off like that doesn’t sit well.”
Farrell added that he believes Ireland can learn a lot from the defeat to South Africa.
“If you can’t learn from that [defeat], you’re in the wrong place, really,” he added.
“Going down to 12 men, how the lads came out and showed the bottle for their country.
Certainly, the first ten minutes of the second half were amazing, and you could see from the crowd, the amount of effort they put in, the crowd recognised that and supported them.”
