Wrong decision.
If there’s one thing we weren’t short of in Ireland vs South Africa last night, it’s cards.
Referee Matthew Carley must have thought it was Christmas already, with Ireland on the receiving end of no less than five yellow cards, with one of them upgraded to a 20-minute red card.
But one incident that escaped a card, saw Springbok playmaker Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu land a dangerous shot on Ireland’s Tommy O’Brien.
The incident took place before any of Ireland’s cards, and could very well have seen a different outcome, had the fly-half gone to the bin at least. Instead, it was just a penalty.
After the game, Ireland head coach Andy Farrell and skipper Caelan Doris were asked if a card should have been handed out, and both were in agreeement.
“Well, you’re asking the question because you thought so as well. So, yeah,” Farrell when asked if Sacha should have been carded.
Doris felt the same…
“I thought the same, yeah. Thought the same,” the Ireland captain said.
Have another look at the incident below. Should it have been a card?
A scuffle breaks out after Feinberg-Mngomezulu's tackle on Tommy O'Brien. The Springbok fortunate to escape further sanction there.
