Eddie Jones has been confirmed as the new head coach of Super rugby franchise the Stormers. The current Japan coach will take over ahead of the 2016 season.
Western Province Rugby Union President Thelo said, “Our Director of Rugby, Mr Gert Smal, always promised that he would deliver the best and in Eddie Jones I am more than satisfied that we have appointed the best coach to take over the reins of the DHL Stormers.”
Wakefield says Eddie Jones is a world class coach and proved it by masterminding Japan’s shock win over the Springboks at the Rugby World Cup on Saturday.
Smal said, “As I said from the start (of our search for a coach), this has been a thorough process, which saw me look both internally and externally.
“Eddie was always on my mind in terms of potential external candidates and it’s a massive coup that we have signed a coach of his ability – really, his coaching credentials and achievements do speak for themselves.
The former World Cup winning Wallabies coach takes over from Allister Coetzee who now coaches in the Japanese League.
Jones coached Australia to the 1999 World Cup title.
He also served as a technical advisor to Jake White when the Springboks won the world cup in 2007.
