Eben Etzebeth handed lengthy ban as verdict reached

Banned.

Springboks lock Eben Etzebeth has been handed a lengthy ban following his red card for eye gouging Wales flanker, Alex Mann.

The towering second-row has been banned for 12 weeks following a lengthy decision-making process.

The committee determined that contact with the eye was intentional and set a mid-range entry point of 18 weeks/matches.

Etzebeth was afforded six weeks off, as he has not had a suspension since 2012. The Springbok also admitted that he had committed an act of foul play and that it warranted a red card.

This sanction is the harshest handed down to a top-end rugby union player for an offence of this nature for nearly a decade
