Eddie Jones has revealed that Dylan Hartley may not retain the England captaincy role moving forward.
The appointment of Hartley was considered a controversial decision after the player’s string of disciplinary mishaps over his career. It wads made even worse when Hartley picked up another suspension last month.
His six week suspension for a swinging arm offence on Leinster’s Sean O’Brien, brings his career tally up to a staggering 60 weeks. Hartley however despite this, has proved himself an able leader, guiding England to an unbeaten season.
But England head coach Eddie Jones says the mantle of England captain could be passed onto someone else as they look towards the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
“Dylan’s our ‘foundation’ captain but the next two years will be our (2019) tournament captain. Whether that’s Dylan – it’s a possibility – or someone else is something we’ll appraise,” Jones told the Guardian.
This could be the strongest indication yet that Hartley could lose the captaincy tomorrow when Jones names his Six Nations squad.
