The deal is off.
Former All Black outhalf Dan Carter will not rejoin French giants Racing 92 due to medical reasons, the club announced on Saturday.
The former World Player of the Year has been deemed ineligible to play in France by the French National League after Racing referred his medical results to the organisation who run the Top 14 competition.
“Racing 92 handed over certain elements of his medical dossier to the experts designated by the French National League. Their opinion was unanimous: Dan Carter can’t play rugby in France,” said a statement.
Carter has recently finished up his first season in Japan with Kobe Steelers, and helped guide them to the title – while being named the league’s MVP.
He was signed as a medical joker for Racing until the end of the season following Pat Lambie’s retirement, and was granted a temporary release by his Japanese club. But the deal will now no longer happen and his hopes of one last shot at a European title have been destroyed for bizarre reasons.
