Clermont have signed former All Black Isaia Toeava on a two-year deal.
The New Zealander – who has spent the past three seasons playing in Japan – will fill in for full-back Nick Abendanon. The 2015 European Player of the Year has been ruled out for three months due to a groin injury.
“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Isaia,” said Jean-Marc Lhermet, Clermont’s director of sport.
“He can play in a number of positions at the back and this is a time when we have many players out injured and we need to adapt.
“We had been targeting this for a long time. We recently managed to reach an agreement for the next two seasons, but we had an opportunity to use this option earlier.”
Toeava, 30, featured at the 2007 and 2011 World Cups for the All Blacks. The utility back also scored eight tries on 36 appearances for the his country.
