New study ranks the best Six Nations stadiums to visit

Rome’s Stadio Olimpico comes out on top as the best stadium for the ultimate rugby experience for this year’s Six Nations Championship.

The Principality Stadium ranked highest in the UK (2nd), with Twickenham (4th), Murrayfield (5th) and the Aviva Stadium (6th) in Ireland, rounding out the bottom three.

New research from cinch, the UK’s biggest online used car retailer and partner of Premiership Rugby side Northampton Saints, has ranked all the stadiums being used this year to reveal where fans will enjoy the action most.

The research measured important fan-focused metrics, including:

  • Stadium capacity and atmosphere
  • The average price of a fast-food meal within the city
  • Spectator viewing experience
  • Traffic levels within the city
  • Number of accommodation options within a two-mile radius

The Best Six Nations Stadium to Visit Revealed

If you’re looking for the ultimate Six Nations experience, cinch’s study suggests the Stadio Olimpico in Rome is the place to visit.

The Six Nations is about so much more than just top-class rugby. It’s about the entire fan experience, so we wanted to find out which Six Nations stadium offers the best day out, from the atmosphere in the stands to the cost of grabbing a bite to eat before kick-off.

“With an impressive capacity of 70,634, affordable food options within the city averaging just £8.12, and over 1,000 accommodation choices within two miles of the stadium, it’s no surprise that Stadio Olimpico takes the top spot.”

Stadium capacity and atmosphere

For the biggest crowds, it’s Twickenham that comes out on top. With a capacity of 82,000, it comfortably holds the most fans, and you can expect the best atmosphere when England play at their home ground.

At the other end of the scale, Aviva Stadium in Dublin is the smallest of the Six Nations venues, seating just 51,700 supporters.

Affordability of food

A matchday isn’t complete without grabbing a bite to eat, and if you’re after the best-value meal, Cardiff is the winner, with fast food in the city averaging just £7.51.

On the flip side, Paris is the priciest place for a quick meal, with our research suggesting it can cost £10.50 on average.

Spectator viewing experience

Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, Murrayfield in Edinburgh, and Dublin’s Aviva Stadium have the best fan reviews on the website A View From My Seat, with each of these stadiums scoring on average 4.4 stars out of a possible 5.,

The Stadio Olimpico falls short in this category, with an average rating of just 3.9 on the website.

Traffic levels

Travelling to the stadium on matchday can be a challenge, but the Stade de France stands out as the easiest to get to, thanks to Paris’ congestion level of 30% according to the TomTom Traffic Index.

Dublin has the highest traffic congestion level at 47%, making journeys to the Aviva Stadium a bit more difficult.

Accommodation options

For any fans planning an overnight stay, Rome comes out on top. According to Booking.com, there are 1,051 accommodation options within a two-mile radius of Stadio Olimpico. In comparison, Twickenham has the fewest nearby, with only 61 options.
