Adam Jones has arguably been one of the best tighthead’s in World Rugby for the past decade or so.
The former Wales and Lions prop has been a nightmare for many opposing scrums in the past, including an awe-inspiring tour for the Lions in 2013 where he, along with English prop Alex Corbisiero- destroyed the Wallaby pack.
Given Jones’ record at tighthead, it was of course a huge surprise to see the former Ospreys man lineout in an unfamiliar role at loosehead for Harlequins this past weekend. Did Jones disappoint? Of course not.
The Welshman has been the talk of English rugby for his fantastic display after he was asked to play 74 minutes plus stoppage time not only on the wrong side of the set-piece but up against renowned England international bruiser Kieran Brookes.
Jones, who was involved in his first game of the season following the death of his mother, didn’t know he was even on the bench until the morning of the match when teammate and England star Joe Marler pulled out of the squad with a back spasm. When his replacement Mark Lambert went off with a head injury after five minutes, Adam was thrown on at loosehead.
When he came on Jones then provided what can only be seen as a scrummage masterclass, while also showing up with a number of key tackles, earning plenty of plaudits from pundits as well as his head coach and an array of people from social media.
What an absolute legend. [WalesOnline]
