Former Wales & Lions prop Adam Jones is once again the talk of English rugby.
A few months back the experienced tighthead prop found himself packing down at loosehead for 74 minutes in a memorable display, and once again ended up in the number one jersey yesterday, but this time the circumstances were even more extreme.
Jones, who recently signed a deal with Harlequins making him a player-coach, was given the weekend off as his side took on struggling Sale Sharks. Just hours before kick-off however, scrum coach Graham Rowntree let Harlequins know he couldn’t make the game, with Jones asked to make the trip from Wales along the M4 at 11.30am to look after Quins pack.
The former British and Irish Lion, being the ultimate professional, of course made the trip but things then took another twist when England loosehead Joe Marler was ruled out in the warm up with a problem he picked up against Gloucester a few weeks back.
Former Newport Gwent Dragons loosehead Owen Evans and Will Collier were then forced off with injuries, leaving Jones once again thrust in the action early.
“Adam was phoned at 11:30am because unfortunately [forwards coach] Graham Rowntree couldn’t make it,” Kingston said following Quins’ 29-26 win.
“He drove up and he took on the forwards coach position, and he took the warm up until he realised he was going to have to warm up himself.
“I’ve been working in this industry for 20 years and I don’t think I know a more professional man.
“The win was a massive positive as we dealt with every challenge with unbelievable tenacity, which shows the togetherness of the team.
What an absolute legend.
