Australia boss Joe Schmidt has taken a cheeky dig at South Africa ahead of the Rugby Championship referencing a controversial moment in their tied summer series with Ireland.

Schmidt, who previously coached Ireland, leading them to multiple Six Nations championships, has had a pop at South Africa over a hugely controversial disallowed try in the first test in Pretoria last month.

James Lowe looked to have scored an incredible solo try to give Ireland the lead in the second half but the score was disallowed after the TMO got in the referee’s ear to highlight an apparent infringement in the ruck several phases back.

Even former referee Nigel Owens has since come out to claim the decision was completely wrong and Schmidt has stated that this is not the first time the Springboks have had such “luck.”

“South Africa looked pretty impressive, with the level and intensity of that Irish series,” Schmidt told reporters.

“There was a bit of controversy with James Lowe’s try being disallowed. For South Africa, they tend to get a bit of luck from that perspective.

But the Wallabies boss did credit the Boks for making their own luck in a lot of instances too.

“They don’t need too much luck to fall their way, though. They make a lot of their own luck with the quality of player and the connectedness that they have,” he added.

“They have guys who’ve played a lot of Test match footy together.

“That breeds a confidence, and an almost unspoken trust amongst players, that they know what each other are going to do and they have an expectation of them doing it well.”
