Not to be.

Aaron Cruden has revealed that he spoke to Ulster Rugby about a potential move to the Irish province but ultimately decided against a move to Belfast.

The 50-times capped former All Black has been without a club since he left Japanese side Suntory Sungoliath back in May.

Ulster are currently in the market for an experienced fly-half with Billy Burns set to join provincial rivals Munster next season.

The 35-year-old turned down the move for family reasons while also rejecting his former club, the Crusaders.

“I had a good phone call with the crew at Ulster and they were great, to be fair, really cool,” Cruden told Sky Sport NZ’s Aotearoa Rugby Pod.

“Obviously my wife and I have a bit of a thirst for travel and exploring the world. Right now, as it stands, family-wise, we have another baby coming soon, so it doesn’t quite fit for us timing-wise.

“I did say to them I really appreciated the interest. Clearly I’m a 35-year-old veteran who still has a bit of game!

“A lot of the decisions I’ve made, especially this year, around the rugby has been based around my family and making sure it fit for everyone. It was tough from a professional point of view, and as a competitor, I’m still keen to play. But prioritising my family right now is the right way.”
