World Rugby are considering staging a Rugby World Cup every two years in a move that will likely not go down well with fans across the globe.
The governing body’s showpiece event is currently staged every four years, as it is in pretty much every other sport, and a move to host a biennial Rugby World Cup will only water down the prestige of the competition.
A similar move has been proposed by FIFA in football recently and it has been met with widespread backlash and it’s hard to see rugby fans reacting any different.
World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin, chairman Bill Beaumont and France 2023 director general Claude Atcher met in Paris this week, and the Telegraph have reported that staging a biennial World Cup was among the items on the agenda.
“Biennial World Cups have been considered before and they’re definitely something that we will continue to consider,” Gilpin told the Telegraph.
“It’s an interesting concept, especially when you think about the global development of the women’s game too.
“But the men’s calendar is very congested and complex, with a lot of different stakeholders, and we have to make sure we engage with them all before we consider a World Cup every two years.”
