Just the ticket.
Warren Gatland is attempting to put together one of the most formidable Lions coaching tickets of all-time with three big names being lined up.
According to a report in the Telegraph this afternoon, Ireland head coach Andy Farrell, Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend and England defence coach will all be offer roles ahead of this summer’s series.
Farrell has been on multiple tours with Gatland in the past but permission from the IRFU to leave might be tricker this summer now that he’s the head coach. But with no word of any summer tours yet amid the pandemic, he may be free, along with Mitchell and Townsend.
The report suggests Townsend will be offered a significant assistant coach role that will see him in charge of defence, while one of just Farell and Mitchell may join the ticket, circumstances depending.
And keeping in line with Gatland’s preference of continuity, Leicester head coach Steve Borthwick, Munster forwards coach Graham Rowntree and Wales skills coach Neil Jenkins are all also expected to be part of the Lions coaching ticket.
Confirmation is expected on the backroom team as soon as the tour schedule and venue itself is set in stone.
