Waikato Rugby came out in the Mitre 10 Cup this morning, defeating the Wellington Lions 53-28 in a high-scoring affair.

All Black Damian McKenzie notched an incredible 33 points in a game that was littered with some of the best players New Zealand has to offer.

Julian Savea got Wellington off the mark early on with a try assisted by his brother Ardie but it wasn’t enough with Waikato proving to be too much for the home side in the end.

But it’s the interview after the game from Wellington’s Du Plessis Kirifi that has everyone talking.

“A hard-fought effort today, commiserations and all the best for next week,” Kirifi was told in an interview after the game.

The interviewer [I think it could be former All Black Mils Muliaina] then got one of the best responses ever from the 23-year-old Hurricanes man.

“Commiserations? No one’s died! It’s just our job and we didn’t do too well at it today,” Kirifi said with a smile.

“But cheers Mil, we’ll take the time off and get back on Monday and go hard.”
