World Rugby vice chairman Bernard Laporte has revealed that South Africa are in “advanced talks” to replace Japan in the upcoming Eight Nations tournament set to take place in November and December.

The special competition was set to feature the traditional Six Nations along with Fiji and Japan but with the Brave Blossoms now unwilling to travel, organisers have been forced to find a replacement.

Most people expected Georgia to be invited but it looks like they have once again been overlooked with the world champions now in talks to join the championship.

What exactly this means for the Rugby Championship should the Springboks join the Eight Nations remains to be seen.

“The Japanese will not come to Europe, he told us,” Laporte told Le Progress in France.

“We are looking for a nation to replace them. We are in advanced talks with South Africa. It would be great to be able to face the Springboks, world champions, in the title, but it’s not yet done,”
