Ireland could have a new captain when their season finally resumes in October with head coach Andy Farrell refusing to guarantee Johnny Sexton will remain on as skipper.

Sexton took over from Rory Best after the World Cup following his retirement but it appears the appointment was never supposed to be a long-term one.

The 35-year-old has previously admitted that his appointment was likely only for one campaign but it could be even shorter due to the fractured nature of the season due to the pandemic.

“Andy Farrell had spoken to me before the Six Nations,” Sexton said back in April

“We talked about it [captaincy] being a one campaign thing. So, I’m not sure what he’ll do going forward whether he’ll go with someone else or whether he thinks I’ve done a good job.

“If it is someone else I’ll get in behind them and if it is me I’ll try to improve and help the team as best as I can.”

Speaking this week Farrell stated that he believes Sexton did, in fact, do an excellent job in the three games he led his country but hinted that he may go with someone else when Ireland’s season resumes on October.

“I thought he did a super job and he’s going to continue to do a super job, but like all captaincies, and all captains know this, injury prevention is certainly a key factor and form has to come into it,” Farrell said via the Irish Independent.

“Johnny is more aware than anyone else. That’s his competitive spirit anyway, that’s in him and he’s certainly got some big games coming up before the international season kicks off.”
