New addition.
Fiji Rugby Union CEO John O’Connor has confirmed that they are on the verge of joining the Six Nations in an expanded competition.
With World Rugby announcing plans yesterday for a revised international calendar this year, Six Nations are expected to host a modified version of the championship in November with the addition of two extra teams.
O’Connor also revealed that Fiji could be set to form a Super Rugby team with New Zealand and Australia interested in bringing them on board.
“We are on the verge of joining the Six Nations rugby competition and have Super Rugby New Zealand and Australia knocking on our doors, great opportunities for Fiji Rugby which we could only dream of in the past,” O’Connor said.
The other team reportedly in talks to join a temporary expanded eight nations competition are Japan although there have been some conflicting reports that the other team could be Georgia.
World Rugby’s plans yesterday proposed a temporary international window between 24 October and 5 December.
In the north, this window would accommodate the postponed men’s and women’s Six Nations matches at the end of October, a rest weekend on 7 November and a programme of international matches involving the Six Nations and invited teams hosted in Europe from 14 November through to 5 December.
The Rugby Championship 2020 would be hosted in full in a single country (likely new Zealand) over a reduced six-week between 7 November and 12 December.
