The current November international schedule looks set to be completely wiped off the calendar in favour of two championships, following comments from South African Rugby chief executive Jurie Roux.

The Springboks were due to travel to Italy, France, Ireland and Wales for their traditional tour but has Roux said SA Rugby are set to prioritise the Rugby Championship in New Zealand later this year over a trip to Europe.

Roux also confirmed reports that Six Nations officials are looking to run a championship of their own in November with their nations along with the addition of Japan and Fiji.

He also noted that 2020 Six Nations will be completed before that, reportedly in October.

“Whatever we can fit into that window we will and we are trying to deliver the Rugby Championship, which would almost certainly be in the bubble in New Zealand,” Roux told reporters.

“If we do that there will be no time for other internationals, and in any case the northern hemisphere has been clear that they want to complete the Six Nations and then play a tournament with Japan and Fiji in that period.”

Whatever happens, it looks like we’ll have plenty of rugby to look forward to before the year is out.
