It looks like England and Harlequins prop Joe Marler won’t be retiring from international duty after all following the backlash he received for an unsavoury incident with Alun Wyn Jones back in March.

Marler was handed a ten-week ban (which will mean nothing in the end because he’s missing no games with the season postponed) after he was found guilty of grabbing the Wales lock by the testicles in their Six Nations encounter.

The prop was expected to retire from international duty for the second time in as many years but it appears he has made a huge u-turn and he will be available for England selection when rugby resumes

Eddie Jones and his assistant Matt Proudfoot have, according to multiple reports, convinced Marler that he still has a role to play at the 2023 World Cup in France.

The two England coaches have been in touch with the 29-year old over Zoom, with Proudfoot publicly throwing his backing behind Marler.

“I am trying to mentor them through the challenges they have,” said Proudfoot.

“I try to have a series of in-depth conversations with each player through the day and just really talk to them, find out what they are struggling with. How can I give them a different perspective?”
