Scrapped.
The 2019/20 Guinness PRO14 season looks set to be scrapped as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic with Irish province Leinster set to be declared as champions.
The Daily Mail is reporting that it is inevitable that the PRO14 will follow the French Top 14 in being scrapped, with officials not having announced it yet for insurance reasons.
It is also being said that qualification for next season’s European Champions Cup could be judged on current standings.
Bit there could be some opposition to the Irish province retaining the championship despite their huge lead in the overall standings with Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) performance director Jim Mallinder recently making his feelings known.
“From a SRU point of view we wouldn’t agree with that.” Mallinder said.
The former Northampton Saints man added that they are open to the season resuming in some way.
“They are taking advice from all the unions, and the medical side, so we’re still very open-minded PRO14 wise about restarting or restructuring, whatever that might be, but at the moment no decision has been taken,” Mallinder added.
