Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has again decided to leave Finn Russell out of his squad this weekend ahead of their Calcutta Cup clash with England at Murrayfield.
The maverick playmaker missed Scotland’s defeat to Ireland on Saturday after being sent home from camp following a drinking incident on the Sunday before the game that reportedly led to him not showing up for training on the Monday morning.
The outhalf allegedly ignored several requests to stop drinking at the hotel bar after he met up with his international teammates following Racing 92’s Champions Cup defeat to Saracens.
Scotland sent him back to France and he then went on to play in Racing 92’s win over Brive but despite Scotland opening the door for his return ahead of the England game, he has once again been left out of their squad and now looks set to play no part in the Six Nations.
Adam Hastings now looks set to be retained at outhalf as Scotland look to retain the Calcutta Cup having beaten England in 2018 before going on to draw with them last year in dramatic fashion following a second-half rally led by Russell.
“Let’s just see what happens over the next few weeks. Every individual has to align himself to what’s to benefit the team,” Gregor Townsend said following Russell’s latest omission.
“If their actions are against that there will be consequences.”
