Guinness Six Nations Team Of The Week – Round 1

Best of the best.

The Guinness Six Nations returned this past weekend and it certainly didn’t disappoint with three absolutely cracking opening games to get us up and running.

Wales left it late to get their bonus-point try in a 42-0 win over Italy at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff before Ireland edged past Scotland 19-12 in a hard-fought contest at the Aviva Stadium with captain Johnny Sexton grabbing the only try of the game.

France then blew the entire championship wide open when they defeated tournament favourites England 24-17 at the Stade de France in an absolute belter of a tie with number eight Gregory Alldritt putting in a man of the match performance.

A number of players impressed over the weekend but only 15 of them could make our team of the week with some notable performers unfortunate to miss out.

Here’s your Six Nations Team of the week from Round 1.

15. Anthony Bouthier (France)
How can you not put him in after that kick?

14. Jonny May (England)
Almost single-handedly brought England back into the game with two incredible solo scores but it was too little, too late in the end.

13. Nick Tompkins (Wales)
England will be devastated that they let this lad slip through their fingers. Massive cameo off the bench.

12. Gael Fickou (France)
The 25-year-old was France’s most experienced player at the weekend as the young guns shocked England. A rock in defence.

11. Josh Adams (Wales)
The hat-trick hero was superb for Wales against Italy.

10. Johnny Sexton (Ireland)
The Ireland captain bagged all 19 of his team’s points as they edged past Scotland including the only try of the game. An honourable mention for Romain Ntamack who was also immense for France.

9. Antoine Dupont (France)
There are no words for this lad.

1. Joe Marler (England)
One of the few England players that performed on Sunday.

2. Ken Owens (Wales)
The Welsh hooker didn’t put a foot wrong on Saturday.

3. Tadhg Furlong (Ireland)
Forced to stay on following Dave Kilcoyne’s concussion and was somehow still carrying like a mad man with 70+ minutes on the clock.

4. Bernard Le Roux (France)
Absolutely brutalised England.

5. James Ryan (Ireland)
This kid just doesn’t know how to have a bad game.

6. CJ Stander (Ireland)
Switched back to eight early on following Doris’ injury and looked like he had a point to prove. A towering man of the match performance.

7. Charles Ollivon (France)
This man was absolutely everywhere against England on Saturday, grabbing two excellent tries in the process.

8. Gregory Alldritt (France)
16 tackles in a man of the match performance.
