Irish players have always played a big part on Lions tours over the years. Brian O’Driscoll wad made tour captain in 2005, with Paul O’Connell taking the reigns against the Springboks in 2009.
Peter O’Mahony led Ireland out in New Zealand against the All Blacks for the first Test back in 2017, with the likes of Johnny Sexton, Conor Murray, Tadhg Furlong, Sean O’Brien and CJ Stander playing key roles.
The next Lions tour is just under two years away, and while Ireland didn’t exactly perform at the Rugby World Cup, their players appear to have found form again with the provinces.
But are any of them already nailed on for selection when Warren Gatland picks his side to tour South Africa in 2021? We spoke to 2005 and 2009 tourist, David Wallace and he reckons a couple might just be – but stressed that it’s difficult to say this far out.
“It’s difficult,” Wallace said.
“There’s no ever really ‘nailed on’, form can come and go.
“But I think guys like James Ryan [will be in the mix], Tadhg Furlong – he’s definitely gonna be there.
“There’s probably a handful of guys depending on age and wear and tear and things like that.
“[Johnny] Sexton might still be around, Peter O’Mahony, CJ Stander, those guys are certainly going to be in with a shout. Keith Earls as well too.
“But it’s a couple of years away and there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge.
He also named dropped a Munster and Ireland fav favourite that a lot of fans would no doubt like to see there.
“On current form – Andrew Conway would be a great guy I’d love to see out there.”
Hopefully, Andy Farrell will give Conway his chance with Ireland and who knows what could happen.
David Wallace was speaking at a Canterbury event where they announced that they have renewed their deal with the British & Irish Lions to be the official apparel partner of the Lions team for their tour of South Africa in 2021.
As part of this partnership, grassroots clubs who have produced a Lions player can now sport a Lions Origin Club logo on their jerseys to proudly celebrate their role in the development of the players.
