No scrum, no win.
England were dealt an early blow this morning in the Rugby World Cup final when tighthead prop Kyle Sinckler was forced off after just three minutes following a nasty bang to the head.
Dan Cole was brought on as a replacement but from the very first scrum, the Leicester Tigers veteran was blown away along with the rest of his forwards by a dominating display from the Springboks pack.
South Africa took full advantage of that dominance, winning a number of scrum penalties which were converted into 15 of their 32 points. The Boks scored two tries late on, but it was those scrum penalties that ultimately decided the game.
Former Ireland and Munster outhalf Ronan O’Gara summed up the game quite perfectly with his excellent Tweet.
Something beautiful about this Final. As everything becomes more scientific/professional and analysed to death…,the game returns to its core values.
