Ronan O’Gara reckons it would be an “really interesting attack ploy” if Ireland decided to deploy Joey Carbery at inside centre during the World Cup in Japan this year.

The modern game has seen a big shift towards putting a second playmaker in at 12 instead of the old fashioned powerhouse. But given the strength Ireland have in the centre, O’Gara says he wouldn’t necessarily start Carbery there.

Instead the former Munster and Ireland outhalf reckons it could be a good move to slot him in there with 20 or 30 minutes left in a game, giving him an opportunity to attack some tired defences.

“Would I start him there I don’t know, I think with the quality of centres we have in Ireland and with the way modern defences are.” O’Gara told Off The Ball AM.

“I would be a massive fan of him there from the 50th to the 80th minute with tiring defences, he just has something that very few people have.”

“Coupled with Johnny’s [Sexton] passing game I think it would be a really, really interesting attack ploy,”

But no matter when Carbery plays, O’Gara is just a massive fan.

“I think he’s just an exciting footballer you look at that try he set up for [Keith] Earls against Scotland, very few people in the world can do that.” O’Gara added

“You know that’s him in a seven-second spurt, the power to burst through two forwards, his capacity to keep his balance, to scan on the run and pick out a pass and execute a pass.”
