On the move.

All Blacks superstar Beauden Barrett is set to move to Auckland after the World Cup with his wife, according to the NZ Herald.

Barrett’s contract with New Zealand and the Hurricanes is up at the end of the season and it’s believed the Blues are trying to capture his signature. And with Barrett set to move to Auckland, home of the Blues – that move now looks more likely than ever.

A commute from Auckland to Wellington (home of the Hurricanes) would be asking a lot (almost 8 hours) –  so it’s highly unlikely Barrett will stay on with the Hurricanes beyond this season if he is indeed moving to Auckland.

But the two-time World Player of the Year looks set to take an extended playing/non-playing break after the World Cup similar to Brodie Retallick however, meaning he will probably be unavailable for much, if not all of the 2020 Super Rugby season – and maybe even the 2021 season too.

So whichever Super Rugby team Barrett ends up playing for beyond this season might not see him in action again until 2022. Either way the race for his signature will be huge – he’s still only 28 after all, and still arguably the best player in the world.
