French rugby boss Bernard Laporte has confirmed they are in “full negotiation” with Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards about bringing him on board after the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Edwards’ future has been the subject of huge speculation, with his contract with the WRU set to expire in a few months. He was originally set to move back to Rugby League with Wigan, but that deal has since fallen through.

A contract was then put on the table by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) but they have confirmed in the last few minutes that Edwards will not be staying. As for France – Edwards hasn’t said yes, but he hasn’t turned the offer down either.

“Unfortunately, he told us neither yes nor no. I would like, but it does not depend on me anymore,” said former Les Bleus coach Laporte

As for his decision to not remain with Wales, Edwards described it as an “incredibly difficult” one.

“After more than 10 years with Wales this has been an incredibly difficult decision to reach but I won’t be renewing my contract,” Edwards said.

“I would like to thank Warren (Wales head coach Gatland) and the WRU (Welsh Rugby Union) for the opportunity I have had working with the national team.”

“We have won four Six Nations titles during my time with Wales, but I sincerely hope and believe that the best days are yet to come and I am fully focused on seeing what we can achieve in Japan.”
