“He’s got the quality to do it,”

Former All Blacks coach Wayne Smith is without doubt one of the greatest coaches the game has ever seen. The 61-year-old has pretty much done it all. He’s won World Cups, Super Rugby titles, Rugby Championships – you name it.

He’s coached in England, New Zealand, Italy and Japan. And pretty much every club our country he’s worked with has enjoyed successful spells. So when he talks, you listen. And when he says a coach is quality – then you better believe that coach is quality.

One of Smith’s many successful spells (2012-14) saw him and current Glasgow Warriors coach Dave Rennie take the Chiefs to unprecedented heights. From the whipping boys of New Zealand rugby to Super Rugby champions – twice. And Rennie, who he still remains close friends with this day, made one hell of an impression on him.

In an excellent interview with Jamie Lyall for RugbyPass, Smith says without doubt – Dave Rennie has what it takes to be an All Blacks head coach someday.

“He should be [a future All Blacks head coach]. That will be determined by him and if he wants to come back and have a crack at it,” Smith says.

But if Rennie decides to stick around up north with Glasgow, Smith says one of the Six Nations teams should seriously considering bringing him in if the timing is right.

“The other thing with Dave, if I was one of the Six Nations teams, he’s the man I’d be targeting as the next head coach. So whether he’ll make it back to coach the All Blacks, I’m not too sure. He’s got the quality to do it, that’s certain.” Smith added

No doubt Glasgow will be hoping they can hold onto Rennie for a while yet. But going off this recommendation, and the work he’s done in Scotland so far – it won’t be easy.
