Head coach Joe Schmidt looks set to make a huge selection call this weekend for Ireland’s Six Nations opener with England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

As reported earlier this week, Robbie Henshaw was spotted slotting in at 15 during Ireland’s warm weather camp in Portugal in Rob Kearney’s absence, and it looks like that experiment has gone according to plan.

Henshaw began his career as a fullback with Connacht, and has slotted in there on occasion for Leinster over the years. And now according to the Irish Times, there are “strong indications” that Schmidt could surprise us all tomorrow and name Henshaw as his starting 15 for the England game.

It’s the first time since Bundee Aki made his debut in November 2017 that Schmidt has had the New Zealander, Henshaw and Garry Ringrose all fit and available in the centre. And it appears the Ireland boss has figured out a way to get all three into his starting line-up, with Kearney looking like he’s still a bit of match fitness on his return against Scarlets.

Schmidt has previously stated he would have no “hesitation” at selecting Henshaw at fifteen if needs be.
