It’s hard to single out any players after last night’s incredible Irish performance against New Zealand, as they defeated defeated the world champions 16-9 in Dublin. But Peter O’Mahony. Wow.

The Munster and Ireland flanker was a man possessed last night, putting in one of the great Irish performances, and was deservedly named man of the match against the All Blacks.

From the minute the whistle was blown, until he hobbled off with 60+ minutes on the clock, O’Mahony was everywhere. But his game can be truly defined by these three simply incredible moments.

First up was this steal in the 46th minute that resulted in Jacob Stockdale’s match-winning try. The speed at which he gets over the ball, and the sheer power and determination to hold on is incredible. Who knew it would turn out to be one of the most important steals he’s ever made in his career?

Another bonus moment that needs to be included before we look at the other two, is the fact that with 51 minutes on the clock, O’Mahony was clearly badly injured and in need of replacing. But that’s not how O’Mahony wanted to end his day at the Aviva.

Ten minutes after suffering that injury, the Munster captain made a crucial interception that stopped a certain All Blacks try. His sheer will and determination to get back beggars belief. This man bleeds green.

And finally, probably the most commendable action of all. With Ireland desperately defending their line minutes later, O’Mahony gets in and makes another crucial turnover, despite clearly being in an enormous amount of pain. He collapses to the ground as soon as Wayne Barnes awards the penalty. His final act.

The man is one in a million, and without a shadow of doubt – Ireland’s next captain.
