Cian Healy has revealed the current Ireland team are motivated by the goal of becoming the number one team in the world and it starts this weekend against Argentina.

Ireland are currently ranked the number two team in the world, and face Argentina on Saturday, before a mouth-watering clash with New Zealand on November 17.

The All Blacks are the only team in the world currently above them, and should Steve Hansen’s men slip up against England this weekend – Ireland would be in a position to overtake them after a stellar season that saw them win a Six Nations Grand Slam, and secure a series victory over the Wallabies in Australia.

Speaking to former teammate Luke Fitzgerald on The Left Wing podcast, Healy says the next few games are crucial, and it starts this weekend with the Pumas set to descend upon Dublin.

“The next few games give you ranking points,” Healy said.

“Your goal is to get to number one in the world. You have to climb that ladder slowly and every result is on that.”

“I’m looking forward to this one [Argentina] because if we mess this up, our ranking is going to go down. Then we are a little bit further away from that top spot. It’s just week-by-week, climbing the ladder.”

Healy added that the current set-up want to be the most successful team to ever come out of Ireland, and they believe if they can do that – they will reach their goal.

“It’s something I’d like to be a part of,” Healy said of getting to world number one.

“It might happen, it might not happen, we just have to focus on going out and playing as good ball as possible. We want to be the most successful team to come out of Ireland ever, and if we are the most successful team to every come out of Ireland, then we will more than likely go there.”
