Eddie Jones Drafts In Former England Captain In As ‘Leadership Mentor’

Mentor.

England head coach Eddie Jones has drafted in former England captain Will Carling for his management team in the role of ‘leadership mentor’.

Carling is one of England’s most famous captains, having been made skipper of his country at just 22-years-old, leading the national side out in 59 of his 72 caps, winning three Grand Slams in 1991, 1992 and 1995.

The 52-year-old will go straight into his new role on a part-time basis next week ahead of England’s autumn internationals where they will take on South Africa, New Zealand, Japan and Australia.

“He joins the great past of England to the present,” said Jones.

“It is similar to what the All Blacks have done with great players and I think Will can play a role for us,”

“Because I’m not English, I can’t preach to the players about having pride in England,”

“I’ve always thought we have possibly had a gap in that area.”

“Will understands what made English rugby great so combining the skill of leadership with the knowledge of English history is a nice resource for us to have.”

Carling’s role could be extended until the 2019 World Cup in Japan if his appointment proves a success.
