Ridiculous.
In typical French fashion Toulon centre Mathieu Bastareaud has been handed a measly 5-week ban following his violent assault on a Castres player in a Top 14 game earlier this month.
The volatile Frenchman crashed in with strong clear out on at the end of Toulon’s 28-27 win over Castres earlier this month. tussle ensured before Bastareaud landed a vicious swinging forearm to the head on forward Christophe Samson.
He was righty red carded by referee Laurent Cardona but the decision to hand him just a 5-week ban has caused huge controversy. The ban means he will return two weeks before France’s Autumn internationals.

So @FFRugby captain Mathieu Bastareaud has been handed a 5 week ban by @LNRofficiel for brutally forearm smashing a player in the head while they were lying prone & defenceless on the deck! When do France’s Autumn internationals start?! In 7 weeks so the 5 week ban seems legit 👀

Officials were spot-on with Will Spencer red card and I was disappointed with his not guilty plea. But compare that offence with the Bastareaud assault. They are light years apart though according to separate disciplinary panels one merits a ban just 7 days longer than the other. https://t.co/y946ocDjCb

Basteraud is lucky getting just 5 weeks for that swinging arm/ punch on a player lying on the ground.
Especially in the current climate.
At least Will Spencer was trying to make a tackle.
Basteraud was just trying to hurt the bloke on the deck.
