Following on from yesterday’s news regarding the Rugby Europe Championship, we finally now know what Ireland’s Rugby World Cup 2019 Pool will look like.
We already knew Joe Schmidt’s men would be joined by Six Nations rivals Scotland, as well as tournament hosts Japan. But up until yesterday, the make up of the rest of the Pool had been unclear.
Romania were originally slated to be in the Pool, but following a probe into the Spain vs Belgium game, as well as an investigation into the use of ineligible players – Spain, Romania and Belgium have all essentially been disqualified from qualifying. As a result – Russia will now take a spot in Ireland’s pool.
The final spot will be awarded to the play-off winner. Samoa are already guaranteed a spot in that game, but we must first wait for the outcome of the Europe play-off between Germany and Portugal to see who they face.
