Newly-promoted Bristol shocked the rugby world this week with the news that they will be rebranding as the ‘Bristol Bears’, with a new club crest and kit to go along with it.

It’s been met with mixed emotions, but at the end of the day – it’s a smart business decision. The new brand is much more marketable, especially in the USA – a market Premiership Rugby is trying to utilise as much a possible.

But will more clubs follow suit? We’ve already got the likes of the Sale Sharks, Leicester Tigers, Newcastle Falcons and the Exeter Chiefs to name a few. And now we could be about to introduced the Gloucester Lions.

Gloucester Rugby are currently exploring the idea of changing their club badge, having filed a number of trademarks. They have made three trademark applications with the UK Intellectual Property Office.

They currently have two Lions on their current club crest which was introduced in 2005, but the new designs seem to feature a Lion much more prominently, and hints at a ‘Bristol Bears’ style rebranding.
