The clock is ticking.
Tadhg Furlong and Iain Henderson may yet miss Ireland’s crucial Six Nations clash with Wales at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin this weekend.
Indications all along have suggested that both players would be fit and ready for the heavyweight showdown with the Welsh. But Ireland defence coach Andy Farrell has offered an ominous update this afternoon.
He says neither are back in full training yet, with a decision to be made on their fitness on either Wednesday or Thursday. In the past Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has gone against picking players in his matchday squad that have not trained fully all week with the squad.
“He’s (Furlong) hitting his markers.” Farrell said.
“He’s training well. But he’s not been in full training.”
“He’s been doing bit part stuff. We’ll make a decision on that Wednesday night or Thursday.”
“Iain Henderson is a bit like Tadhg. He’s hitting his markers and pushing in the right direction.
“We’ll assess how he pulls up after two hard days worth of training.”
The good news though, is James Ryan is back in full training and will be available. Either way, Farrell is confident Ireland have a squad strong enough to defeat Wales this weekend.
“We back the full squad that we’ve got. We’ve got quality players across the board.” Farrell added
“We’ll make the right decision come Wednesday/Thursday.”
Should Furlong not make it, Andrew Porter is expected to start in his place. Devin Toner would likely step in if Henderson isn’t passed fit.
