Kyle Sinckler’s Story Of How He Started Playing Rugby & Became A Prop Is Hilarious

What a legend.

Kyle Sinckler has had one hell of a season. The Harlequins prop impressed Eddie Jones enough for the Australian to pick him in his Six Nations squad, and after a string of impressive performances off the bench, he found himself in Warren Gatland’s Lions squad a fee weeks later.

The tighthead prop has been reflecting on his career in rugby and how he became a professional at a Lions press conference today, and it’s a truly remarkable and hilarious story.

“So I started playing rugby when I was eight or nine” Sinckler said.
“I used to play football. I don’t know if you guys call it soccer here.”
“I used to keep getting in trouble, getting sent-off all the time. And then my mum was just speaking to her friend on the phone one day and said, ‘Oh you should bring Kyle down to the local rugby club.’

“And then I rocked up to the local rugby club in full Manchester United kit and just fell in love with the game there.
“I played centre until I was about 13 years old, got scouted by Harlequins because I was playing against the back coach’s son and I think I got sent-off in that game as well!”
“He invited me Harlequins academy for a training session and we all met up and warmed up and then we had a split, so like you know, forwards split and back split.
“I was obviously running away to the backs and then the coach grabbed me by the back of my collar and said “Nope, you’re a tighthead prop now’ and just threw me in the deep end so I was kind of just told, I was a tighthead prop from about 13 or 14 years old!”

What a brilliant story and excellent decision by that coach!
