Reports today suggest the Cheetahs have been formally invited to join the PRO12.
The Super Rugby side based in Bloemfontein have been approached by the league according to BBC Scotland. Two South African franchises will be cut from Super Rugby from 2018, amid a downsizing of the competition.
The Cheetahs and the Port Elizabeth-based Kings are widely expected to lose their Super Rugby status.
Cheetahs Rugby CEO Harold Verster howevr, confirmed to Jacaranda FM Sport that he is aware of the proposed offer based on the type of game that the Cheetahs play, but denies any official approach by the PRO12.
“For now we are still involved in Super Rugby and any engagements with SA Rugby are sub-judice, so unfortunately I cannot offer any comment on the status of those negotiations.”
In terms of their Super Rugby future, the Cheetahs could not comment, saying that the matter was “sub judice”.
