Ireland’s Rugby World Cup 2023 Bid Suffers Significant Blow

It’s officially a three horse race again.

Ireland’s bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup suffered a blow today with the news that South Africa has lifted it’s ban on hosting international tournaments. This means their bid is now very much back on.

Back in April last year when the South African government placed a ban on their country hosting international tournaments due to the slow process in integrating and providing opportunities for black players in the game. With this ban lifted, South Africa have now shot back into contention, having been early favourites.

The fact that the 2015 Rugby World Cup was in England and 2019 is heading to Japan, World Rugby may look to hosting the 2023 event in the southern hemisphere, ruling both Ireland and France out of contention.

Theo good news however, is Ireland still remain as favourites, with odds coming in as low as 1/3 with some bookmakers. Fingers crossed lads.
