Dropping like flies.
The All Blacks injury crisis is real. The world champions pride themselves on having several players in each position, with enough talent to field two tier one teams. But losing senior stars still effects them, just as it does any other team.
Captain Kieran Read, vice captains Ben Smith and Jerome Kaino, Dane Coles and Nehe Milner-Skudder are currently all on the injured list, and remain as serious doubts for when the Lions come to town this summer.
To make matters worse, Liam Squire is now on the injury list after breaking his thumb. He was expected to fill in if Kaino or Read don’t recover, but now faces six weeks on the sidelines, leaving the All Blacks down to their bare bones in the back-row.
Highlanders coach Tony Brown told reporters:
“It is broken and he’s on the plane home… With Kieran Read out, Liam was probably next cab off the rank [for the All Blacks]. Hopefully, both Kieran and Jerome Kaino can get [back] in time for the Lions.”
Maybe, just maybe the Lions may be in with a chance this summer.
