Irish Rugby Player One Of Three Charged With Rape

After six Grenoble players were questioned by police last month over a gang rape charge, three have now been officially charged.

Prosecutors in Bordeaux have announced that Irishman Denis Coulson, Rory Grice and Loick Jammes are accused of gang raping a 21-year-old woman in a hotel after she met them at a nightclub in Bordeaux following a Top 14 game on March 11.

On March 22 Coulson, Grice and Jammes were arrested and detained at a police station in Bordeaux while Chris Farrell, Dylan Hayes and Peter Kimlin were brought in for questioning. Following this all the players were then called in on Tuesday once again for questioning except for Kimlin.

It appears that Kimlin, Farrell and Hayes have been cleared of any wrongdoing, but the other three have been charged and could face a maximum prison sentence of 20 years if found guilty, according to sport24.co.za.

Being placed under formal investigation in France is often the first step to a trial but it does not necessarily mean that the case will go to court. The three players were not thought to have been held in custody, but have been placed under restrictions which will require them to report regularly to French police until the case is resolved.
