Wales plan to reject a proposal by England to shorten the Six Nations by one week.
The Rugby Football Union want to remove one of the two week breaks from the Six Nations in order to create space for the new global rugby season which will come into effect following the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.
We think it would improve it,” said RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie, who also has support from Premiership Rugby.
“It would narrow the ‘off’ periods and help with the broader narrative.”
Welsh Rugby Union chairman Gareth Davies however, has announced that Wales will oppose any plans to reduce the tournament from seven to six weeks.
“‘We will not be supporting the reduction to the Six Nations weeks.” Davies told the Daily Mail
“We have consulted with players – they are key in all this with player welfare meant to be a key priority- and the general feeling is that this will place greater pressure on them.”
The plans will be discussed at this month’s Six Nations review meeting, with the Scottish Rugby Union also said to be in favour of keeping the Six Nations as is.
