Wales look to have received a massive injury boost with the news that Toby Faletau should be fit and ready for their Six Nations opener.

Rob Howley’s men take on Italy in their opener and will head into the fixture without the likes of Dan Lydiate, who will miss the entire Six Nations and prop Gethin Jenkins.

Faletau was withdrawn from Bath’s christmas fixture with Wasps and hasn’t featured since, as he battles with a knee injury. Wales assistant coach Robin McBryde has given an update on the star back-row however, and it sounds positive.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McBryde said:

“It’s going the right way, but it’s a bit too early to say yea or nay for Italy.

“But he won’t be playing this weekend – that would be rushing it. Let’s see how he is going this week and next week before making any decisions. But ideally, it would be great if he had some game-time the following weekend.”

“He is progressing well and is back running. We are in good contact and have a good relationship with the Bath physiotherapists.”
