Sam Warburton Is Considering His Future With Wales

Sam Warburton is considering his future with Wales as captain.

The back-row is considering stepping down ahead of the RBS Six Nations next month. WalesOnline are reporting that he is considering handing in his armband, in order to focus better on his individual game.

The likes of Jamie Heaslip and Chris Robshaw have proved in recent years that a national captaincy can hinder some players’ games. Both players saw a huge drop in form as captains, but flourished as soon as they were relieved.

Warburton is also considering ruling himself out of contention for the British & Irish Lions captaincy. The Welshman captained the Lions in 2013 and is one of the leading contenders for 2017, but may tell Gatland he is not available for the captaincy.

Warburton has skippered Wales a record 49 times, 16 more times than the previous best of 33 set by Ryan Jones.
